Produced by David Heyman, the iconic role of Willy Wonka is now on the path to get another iteration of the story. Coming out in December 2023, Wonka is a movie that focuses on the chocolate-making genius going through the struggles of setting up his dream chocolate shop. The role will be played by Timothée Chalamet, but this has been met with some backlash.
Based on the book Charlie And The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, Willy has been a popular character over the last couple of decades. The adaptation of the book into movies has managed to bring the story to the masses and now has become one of the most-watched movies during the holiday season. It has had two adaptations so far with one in 1971 and the second one in 2005, with Gene White and Johnny Depp playing the role of the chocolate-maker respectively.
Who Is Willy Wonka
Willy Wonka can be described as a charismatic and mysterious character, he is known for being a chocolate-making genius and an inventor. He is always dressed up in a plum-coloured velvet suit, a white shirt, and a black top hat, often carrying a cane with him.
He was 12 years old when he ran away from home to travel the world, eventually, fate led him to the Loompa Land, Where he met the Oompa-Loompas, a small tribe of people who specialized in making candies. He managed to convince the Oompa-Loompas to come to his factory in England, and they have been helping him make candy ever since.
“Why Him?“
Since the release of the official trailer, fans have been divided on whether the casting of Timothée Chalamet was the right way to go or not.
Many debate that there were way better alternatives when we talk about portraying Willy, the most prevailing one right now is Jeremy Allen White because of his close resemblance in looks to Gene Wilder, the actor who portrayed the character for the very first time in Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, 1971.
On the flip side of the coin, people seem to really like the idea of Timothée Chalamet playing the role, defending the star and saying that he has enough ‘silly guy energy‘ to play the role.
To prove their point, fans have even started sharing an old video of the actor dancing in a performance.
Chalamet will be accompanied by Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant and everybody’s favourite, Rowan Atkinson, who is also popular for his role as Mr. Bean.
