From a small town in Holland, to the big red carpet. That pretty much sums up supermodel Doutzen Kroes, who was recently the cover-girl for WSJ Magazine’s spring fashion issue.
Kroes moved to New York in 2003, at the mere age of 18, in hopes of launching her modeling career in the Big Apple, where everyone supposedly gets their big break. Unfortunately, she kept getting denied the part in castings…the reason? They claimed her to be “too pretty,” which ultimately distracted from the outfit she was modeling. However, soon enough, a turning point arrived when she signed a contract with Victoria’s Secret in 2004 and landed the cover on the 2005 Italian Vogue. Suddenly, everyone seemed to want her for their company or brand.
Since her rise to fame, she has been under a long-term contract with L’Oreal Paris, and starred in many ads such as Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, and Tiffany & Co. In 2014, Kroes was named the second highest-paid model by Forbes Magazine. To forward her interesting journey to her many admirers, her WSJ Magazine spread was a Q & A that covered questions fans worldwide were wondering.

WSJ: Did you always want to be a supermodel?
Doutzen Kroes: I wanted to become a teacher like my mother, or a charity worker. But, my mom said that when I was younger, I told her, “People are going to know me,” so I guess I always had that idea.I secretly sent my photos to a modeling agency in Amsterdam, and they sent me to New York.
WSJ: What was that like?
DK: I resided in an apartment for models in the Meatpacking District. I wasn’t booking jobs, and I was very lonely. The success that people see now took a long time to achieve.
WSJ: You and your husband both travel quite frequently. How do you balance everything?
DK: A lot of communication. Our agents are on the phone every other day. They’re the ones who keep us together.
WSJ: And how long do you think you’ll stay with Victoria’s Secret?
DK: Time will tell, but as they say, “Once an angel, always an angel.”
Doutzen Kroes, now 30, and a loving mother of two has proved many people wrong as she rose to success, and is now estimated to be earning around $7 million annually. Even so, fans expect many more shoots, fashion shows, and new starts from her in the future. This beauty isn’t finished yet!
