Marc Jacobs’ Final Hommage to his Muses, at Louis Vuitton

The legendary Marc Jacobs has turned up trumps with his final collection for LV. The Louis Vuitton Spring 2014 Ad/Campaign is dedicated to the female ‘Muses,’ models and actresses, who have inspired the designer during his sixteen years with the company. In tune with his October show in Paris, the mood remains muted, even somewhat melancholic, reflecting the mysterious charms of the women who have been Jacobs’ inspiration.

The models are Sofia Coppola, Catherine Deneuve, Edie Campbell, Gisele Bündchen, Caroline de Maigret and Fan Bingbing, ranging in age from 23 to 70. Photographed in New York by Steven Meisel in a cool, studio portrait style against dark backgrounds, the women are shown each clutching a different version of the bucket-shaped Noé bag, designed in 1932 by Gaston-Louis Vuitton and intended to accommodate up to five bottles of champagne.

The updated model of the bag has the same detailing as the original, namely a leather handle embossed with LV, the padlock and key bell and pleated tassel closure. A matching detachable zippered pocket is found inside.

Sofia and Gisele showcase streamlined calfskin and Monogram canvas versions of the iconic drawstring bag, which comes in black, red and blue. More flamboyant styles are flaunted by Catherine Deneuve (strewn with glossy blue-black feathers) Edie Campbell (covered in shiny discs) and Fan Bingbing ( sporting the Stephen Sprouse graffiti signature in black sequins on dark blue jacquard). Caroline de Maigret’s bag has a crocodile patterned panel in paler blue, as well as an assortment of studs. Their clothes reflect the luxurious embellishments on the bags, glamorous black and midnight blue with feathers and sequins, complementing the somewhat sombre but very sophisticated mood.

Mark Jacobs is leaving LV to concentrate on his own collection; his successor as artistic director is Nicolas Ghesquière, from Balenciaga. Meanwhile, expect to see the Louis Vuitton Spring 2014 Ad/Campaign featured in February 2014 issues of magazines.
