This month, artist Yayoi Kusama has produced a striking cover image of George Clooney for W Magazine’s Art issue. Spots before the eyes is the likely outcome if you stare too long at the heartthrob actor wearing a black jacket with large white polka dots, over a black shirt with smaller white spots, and blending in with an equally spotty background.
The Japanese artist is famous for her polka dot artwork, through which she aims to she send a message of love to the world. Clooney is also shown in other dotty contexts, such as a spotted interior complete with matching furniture, and leaning against a spotted car.
Other artists have also found inspiration in the star. Tracey Emin has created a neon sign bearing the legend ‘The Passion of Your Smile,’ and has also published George’s answers to her celeb questionnaire, which she found hilarious. He reveals that his own pulse has been set racing by the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, showing his taste for classic beauty and style.
The Catherine Opie study has George in thoughtful mode, standing barefoot in an impeccably tailored suit next to another image of him bearing a bunch of red roses.
As well as providing a show-stopping modelling session for the magazine, Clooney also describes his latest cinematic venture: a movie called The Monuments Men in which he plays the leader of a group of museum curators and art directors whose aim is to locate, identify and restore the artworks seized by the Nazis in WW2. Many so-called ‘degenerate’ works were burned by Hitler’s men, but recently it was revealed that only a few years ago a cache of looted artworks was found in Munich and will be shown online, so the story is very topical. It will show George in a sympathetic role, and no doubt will prove a fascinating movie.
